A tour into the heart of the Valpolicella area with wine tasting of the prestigious Amarone and other wines of the region
Participants will be picked up at 2.00pm to go to the town of San Pietro in Cariano, located right in the heart of the Valpolicella area.
This hilly area at the foothills of the Verona Prealps has been renowned since the days of ancient Rome for its vineyards and the richness of the soil here. The famous Amarone wine that is produced here is sold throughout the world under internationally known local labels. An old estate situated on a hill overlooking the valley and surrounded by vineyards will welcome you, and its staff will take you to discover the culture of wine that has been handed down for centuries in this area dotted with vineyards.
Its grounds include a manor house, built by a noble family in the seventeenth century, which still preserves fragments of Roman architecture like the temple dedicated to the goddess Flora – testimony of the settlements here of ancient Romans who initially erected and planted the vines. The guided tour will start with a walk through the vineyards to learn how the vines are cared for and the grapes harvested; along the way you will see the Roman ruins that are tangible signs of their permanence here.
The visit will continue to the ancient cellars in tuff stone from the 1600s that house oak barrels for aging the classic wines of Valpolicella, then the tour continues on to see the most modern wine-making technologies.
The tour will end in a country courtyard where you can see barchesse (large outbuildings for farm work typical of Venetian villas) and barricaie (large rooms where wine in barrels is stored for aging). Here you can enjoy wine tasting of, for example, Amarone, Valpolicella and Ripasso, all accompanied by locally produced foods and products.
Expected return time is 6pm.
